Wednesday is Jump For Pudsey day and double Olympic gymnastics champion Max Whitlock wants everyone get involved!
We’ve teamed up with Boots UK to launch Jump For Pudsey, encouraging the nation to get active and raise money for BBC Children in Need.
We’ve created a unique ‘Jump for Pudsey Challenge’ which will see people leaping, hopping, jumping and bouncing their way to draw attention to this great charity and help raise money to fund projects for disadvantaged children and young people right across the UK.
Max Whitlock is fully behind the campaign and looking forward to seeing everyone get involved, we caught up with Max to find out more…
Max, what’s the reaction been like after your amazing Olympic experience?
“The reaction has been incredible more than I could ever prepare for, in Rio it was a bit of a bubble and to come home was an amazing feeling. Not only have people said congratulations but also so many people are saying they have been inspired and want to try gymnastics which is very special.”
Why did you decide to get involved in Boots UK’s Jump for Pudsey campaign to support BBC Children in Need?
“I think the Jump for Pudsey campaign is a brilliant idea! It’s great to have a campaign that not only raises money for such an incredible charity but also help people keep fit whilst having fun. I’m sure lots of people will enjoy taking part and I know lots of gymnasts will be taking part and challenging each other to raise as much money as possible. British Gymnastics has created a range of five jump challenges that kids and adults can do at home, so all people need to do is check these out and get jumping! Once you’ve done your jumps just log on to Boots’ online jump totaliser on boots.com/childreninneed to log your jumps and donate.”
What will you be doing on Jump Day?
“I’m sure I’ll be doing my fair share of Jumps for Pudsey on Jump Day. I train alongside other GB gymnasts and no doubt we will be having mini-competitions to do the most jumps to raise money. Everyone at our club from Olympians to toddlers can get involved and that’s what’s so great about the campaign. I’ll also be checking out the hashtag #JumpForPudsey and encouraging people to get jumping. I know Ellie and Becky Downie will be at Boots HQ getting their staff involved too. The five jump challenges created by British Gymnastics make it really easy to get involved and inspire ways you could get jumping. I’m proud that there will be also 1000s of gymnasts all over the country jumping for Pudsey.”
How will the money raised for Children in Need by the campaign be spent?
“BBC Children in Need is a charity that everyone grows up with and it’s a fantastic cause, I’m proud to be able to show my support for such a great charity. All of the money raised by Jump for Pudsey will be spent benefitting the lives of disadvantaged children in the UK. Last year BBC Children in Need helped 34,000 children and young people through health and sports programmes alone. Boots UK has been a fundraising partner of BBC Children in Need for 13 years and with the help of its customers, has raised a £7.5 million. The jumps people do will make a real difference, for example as many as 100 jumps from the public could provide the funds for a young girl who has been bullied make friends at a local youth club.”
Looking further ahead what are your aims for the future?
“The aim is to always improve. That’s the great thing about gymnastics, there’s always new skills to learn or new ways to master routines so I’ll keep working hard to improve all aspects of my gymnastics. We have some fantastic competitions coming up in the UK next year with the British Championships in March in Liverpool then the World Cup of Gymnastics in London in April. It’s great to have events in Britain and to compete in front of the home crowd so I’m looking forward to those.”
