2016 Women’s World Cup: Miu Hirano becomes youngest World Cup champion

Miu Hirano is the 2016 Women’s World Cup champion, very much to the surprise of many spectators after a stunning 4-0 victory went to the Japanese teenager in the final match of the event.

The 16-year-old had caused a big upset in the last four, with a sixth end win over the number one seed Feng Tianwei (SIN), however, very few would have predicted to see Hirano pull off the ultimate achievement and take the World Cup title.

Cheng I-Ching (TPE) stood in Hirano’s way in the final, and with the Chinese Taipei representative seeded three spots above her Japanese opponent, the final was expected to go in Cheng’s favour. But, as some of you may know sport can throw in a few little surprises from time to time, and that’s exactly what happened in the 2016 Women’s World Cup final as Hirano dismantled Cheng without dropping an end.

Game one was close with only a two point margin being the difference between the finalists, but as the match evolved the scoreline began to point to a Hirano win. The second and third ends were comfortably taken by Hirano, before she completed the task at hand with the capture of game four to become the youngest ever Women’s World Cup winner (11-9, 11-5, 11-4, 11-8).

“This is like a dream. I am extremely happy to win the title. I hope that I can get something for my family, coaches and friends back (in Japan) said a very happy Miu Hirano following her World Cup title win.
